Below is the International Phonetic Alphabet. Its use helps seafarers of differing languages communicate. It is from the International Code of Signals 1999

LETTERS: The block syllables are emphasised.
FIGURES: Normally spoken as one, two etc. Used only for difficult comms. Each syllable should be equally emphasised.
