PHONETIC ALPHABET

Before attending the VHF SRC Radio Course and Assessment candidates should learn the phonetic alphabet

Below is the International Phonetic Alphabet. Its use helps seafarers of differing languages communicate. It is from the International Code of Signals 1999

For example communicating an unusual boats name:

'BINGO' would be:

(I spell)

 BRAVO, INDIA, NOVEMBER, GOLF, OSCAR

NOTE:

LETTERS: The block syllables are emphasised.
FIGURES:  Normally spoken as one, two etc. Used only for difficult comms. Each syllable should be equally emphasised.
