A Comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology and the basics of good seamanship. Whilst the RYA Day Skipper theory course requires no previous navigational knowledge, some practical boating experience is desirable. This shorebased course gives enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day.
The course will give you the navigation and theoretical knowledge required to move on towards the Day Skipper Practical course and Day Skipper qualification. The Day Skipper qualification allows you to gain an ICC which is required for chartering yachts abroad.
In the Day Skipper theory course students are taught the basics of coastal and inshore navigation and pilotage including chart work, electronic charts, use of GPS, position fixing, plotting a course to steer, weather forecasting, a knowledge of tides and tidal streams, the Rules of the Road.
As well as navigation the RYA Day Skipper theory course will give an understanding of different yacht types and the equipment they carry as well as safety procedures such as distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, life jackets and life rafts.
Note, the Coastal Skipper has been renamed Coastal Yachtmaster with no change to knowledge or skills required
An advanced course in navigation and meteorology for candidates for the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore practical examinations. This is not a course for beginners, the course does assume knowledge to Day Skipper level although a certain amount of revision is programmed.
Knowledge and understanding of this course syllabus is the minimum requirement prior to participating in the Sail or Motor Cruising practical Coastal Yachtmaster course or undertaking the RYA/MCA Coastal or Offshore Yachtmaster practical exams. This course will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for these stringent practical examinations. Course content concentrates on advanced navigation and meteorology skills
